Differences Between Quartz, Marble, and Granite Countertops

countertopsWhile choosing the best countertop for your project, it is important to know the differences between different materials. Countertops are important in every kitchen or bathroom, as they play a variety of roles, from a hot pad food prep surface to beautifying your kitchen.

However, when remodeling your kitchen, or building from scratch, choosing a countertop material can be daunting, as there is a dizzying array of options on the market to choose from.

Quartz, Marble, and Granite Countertops are some of the best countertops available. However, although all three are durable and heat-resistant, some of their characteristics differ.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz, which is also known as engineered stone, is made from a mixture of 93% quartz and pigments that bind the quartz together. Therefore, it doesn’t look quite as natural as marble or granite, and so it is technically not natural stone.

However, they are available in a larger variety of consistent colors and least expensive. Quartz is also the hardest countertop material of the three, as well as non-porous and stain-resistant, and therefore do not need to be sealed.

Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural stone that is mined rather than manufactured and made up of different materials such as mica and quartz. Therefore, it is available in different colors and patterns that make every slab unique. However, it is not as durable as quartz, but stronger than marble. It is also quite porous and can be stained easily. It is more expensive than quartz but less expensive than marble.

Marble Countertops

Marble countertops also don’t undergo a manufacturing process. It is a natural stone that is mined and used for countertops as it is. Therefore, every slab is unique and comes in a variety of color and patterns that cannot be replicated. However, marble is the softest countertop material of the three and can chip and scratch easily. It is also porous and highly susceptible to stains and have to be sealed during installation and resealed every few years. It is also the most elegant and expensive of the three.
